Ioh(anne)s Dei gratia rex Angl(ie) dominus Hybernie dux Norm(annie) Aquit(anie) com(es) Andeg(auie) archiepiscopis, ep(iscop)is, abb(at)ibus, com(itibus), bar(onibus), iustic(iis), vic(ecomitibus), prepo(s)itis et omnibus ball(iu)is et fidelibus suis salutem. Sciatis nos concessisse et presenti carta confirmasse venerab(i)li patri nostro in Cristo Huberto Cant' archiepiscopo et successoribus suis in perpetuum quod h(abe)ant in curia sua magnas assisas de terris que tenentur in gauelikende de feudo ecclesie Cant' in Cantia, ita scilicet quod idem archiep(is)c(opus) rogabit nos vel capitalem iustic(iarium) nostrum et nos vel ille mittemus aliq(uos) de iustic(iis) nostris in curiam ipsius archiepiscopi in cuius visu et presentia assise ille teneantur. Et quicumque de hominibus de feodo ecclesie Cant' inciderint in misericordiam per assisas illas, illorum misericordie erunt archiepiscopi Cant'. Aliorum vero hominum misericordie qui per assisas illas in misericordiam inciderint in curia ipsius archiep(iscop)i nostre erunt. Quare volumus et firmiter precipimus quod predictus archiep(is)c(opus) et successores sui h(abe)ant et teneant assisas illas in curia sua libere et quiete et sine omni inpedimento et contradictione sicut preditum est cum misericordiis hominum de feudo ecclesie Cant' in perpetuum tempore nostro et tempore heredum nostrorum. Et prohibemus districtius ne quis contra hanc concessionem nostram in aliquo venire presumat. Notification that the king has granted and in this his present charter confirmed to Hubert archbishop of Canterbury and his successors that they may hold in their courts grand assizes concerning lands which are held in gavelkind of the fee of the church of Canterbury in Kent.
